The Current 89.3 Premiere: ZULUZULUU, ‘Fades’

ZULUZULUU new track premiers on The Current 89.3

ZULUZULUU — Greg Grease, DJ Just Nine, MYK, “Proper-T,” Captain Big Bounce, Trelly Mo — are sonic adventurers who defy categorization. Are they hip-hop? Are they funk? Are they soul? Are they Afrobeat? Are they the music of the spheres? Yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes.

The band have announced a new album, What’s the Price (Sound Verite Records/RVL), dropping June 24 online with a vinyl release to follow in September. We’re pleased to present a first listen to “Fades,” a sublime yet challenging track being released today as a single.

In a statement, the band say, “‘Fades’ is a great introduction into the ZULUZULUU philosophy; let’s fade away the novelty and save the day for prophecy. We waste so much time attempting to please each other with small talk. Can we hold some authentic conversation and challenge each other to fade away the fake handshakes and phony friendships?”

As the album’s release approaches, the band members are all keeping busy. Greg Grease is our Local Current DJ in Residence this month— hear him curating and hosting Minnesota music this afternoon from noon to 6 p.m. on our Local Current stream. Grease and DJ Just Nine are playing Soundset on Sunday, and on June 9 ZULUZULUU will be at the Amsterdam with Dam-Funk and Pho.

I Self Devine & Muja Messiah (9th House) - "We Ain't Scared" on 2DopeBoyz

POSTED BYJES7

While drafting up this post, I finally had the time to sit down and marinate with 9th House's (I Self Devine and Muja Messiah) self-titled LP, and boy, have I been sleeping. It's definitely $9 well spent, and will be on continuos rotation.

With the two Minneapolis artists slated to perform at Soundset(alongside A$AP Rocky, Anderson .Paak, Common, Atmosphere and more) later this month, and in wake of current events, 9th House has decided to pen an anthem for the Black Lives Matter movement with "We Ain't Scared" featuring Lady Midnight.

Welcome Greg Grease, our May DJ in Residence on Local Current

Nate Ryan/MPR

For the past year, The Current has been inviting local musicians to take over our all-Minnesota music stream to talk about the local music scene and to share tracks from their favorite local artists. So far, the roster for Local Current’s DJ in Residence has includedMartin DevaneySophia ErisAl ChurchKerry Alexander (Bad Bad Hats), Eric Mayson, and many others. Leading us into our second year of the project is the multi-talented musician, visual artist, and business owner Greg Grease!

Grease releases music under his own name, leads the soul/funk/future space band ZULUZULUU, and is a frequent collaborator with artists like Muja Messiah, Metasota, Sophia Eris, Crescent Moon, and Andrew Broder in the local hip-hop community.

There is a self-described blue-collar Afro-centricity in all of Grease’s projects and he aims to create sounds that empower and elevate. His raps reflect the reality of growing up in a lower-middle=class neighborhood as a black youth, and are paired with feel-good music that pulls listeners in.

Grease also owns and operates River Life Dry Goods, where he designs and hand sews leather goods, canvas bags, and bespoke menswear. Musically, 2015 saw the release of Greg Grease’s latest album, Born to Lurk Forced to Work, and he’s currently in the studio working on ZULUZULUU’s next record, set to release in June.

“I really look forward to the opportunity to expand my knowledge of Minnesota music in many different genres,” says Grease. “I’m always looking for different way to grow my listening palette. I’m also excited to learn what it’s like to play music from a radio perspective.”

Spend your afternoons delving deep into the Minnesota music scene with Greg Grease: every Friday through June 3 from noon until 6 p.m. on Local Current!

Local Current’s DJ in Residence project is supported by the Minnesota Legacy Amendment’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
