Whats's The Price Tour: ZULUZULUU May 25th in Chicago at Subterranean

ZULUZULUU with drea the vibe dealer & Thelonious Martin, May 25th at The Subterranean.

ZULUZULUU bring that new funk, soul, hip-hop together for their unique sound and play with a spiritual, musical celebration.

ZULUZULUU is a Minneapolis-based collective with no fewer than six members, and their cosmic combination of funk, soul, and hip-hop oozes an energy that more than justifies the large lineup.

It’s true that Greg Grease, the beloved Minneapolis MC of dexterous and introspective raps, is the best-known member of the group. More active on the vocal tip, however, is Proper-T, who comes into his own on ZULUZULUU’s new album, What’s the Price?, following past solo endeavors and guest features on Grease songs. With the additional contributions from DJ Just Nine, MMYYKK, ART PARTE, and Trelly Mo, What’s the Price? radiates a powerful sense of collaboration.

After a couple years of performing around the Twin Cities together, the band members finally fused together their idiosyncrasies and commonalities on What’s the Price? The album, which dropped last month, opens with a cover of Syreeta’s Stevie Wonder-penned “Black Maybe." From there, deeply satisfying grooves and lyrics influenced by Afrofuturism dominate the LP. #whatsthepricetour

ZULUZULUU hit the road on the What's The Price Tour Spring 2017

ZULUZULUU hits the road on the upcoming What's The Price Tour Spring 2017.

Minneapolis, MN

R&B / Psychedelic funk / Afro-futurism

Some artists wear their hearts on their sleeves. ZULUZULUU wear their entire beings for all to see. They’re not a band. They’re not a crew. They’re not a collective. They’re a Tribe. Hailing from Minneapolis, their sound is a cauldron of influences drawn from the very best the city has to offer. The fierce funkiness of Prince. The gospel tidings of Sounds of Blackness. The unbridled enthusiasm of The Replacements. The un-exhaustive flow of Atmosphere.

Made up of six musicians/producers, each member of ZULUZULUU brings their own uncommon perspective to each musical declaration. MMYYKK, Proper-T, Greg Grease, DJ Just Nine, ∆RT P∆RTÉ & Trelly Mo spin yarns about life, heritage, and their perspective, all with an exploratory sound that spans much more than just the few artists listed above.

As fun as their experimental, electronic take on R&B futurism is, it’s not to be taken lightly. They are serious about presenting music that will elicit though and inspire greatness. “High Value Black Art” is what they call it. We call it one of the can’t miss shows at this year’s 80/35.

Twin Cities alt-weekly City Pages polled 100-plus critics around the metro area, asking them which local band held the most promise in 2016. ZULUZULUU ran away with the prize. A producers’ supergroup of sorts, ZULUZULUU has been synthesizing and streamlining enough collectivized inspiration (their covers album The Cover Up spans from The Stylistics to DJ Quik) to stand out as a more hip-hop-indebted heir to the classic ’80s Minneapolis sound—the classic DIY funk roots fused with a sample-searching cratedigger’s ear. Think of their mission as the geographical inverse of Jam and Lewis’s early production gigs that helped define the vintage boogie-funk sounds of L.A. and Atlanta; their Twin Cities g-funk feels like TDE and Organized Noize refitted for the Cities’ Midwest art-rap sensibilities. “Black excellence is always our goal, to inspire greatness through sonics and to pay homage to our ancestors,” explains co-producer and MC Greg Grease. “Our inspirations come from the tradition of great black music, jazz, soul, R&B, hip- hop, and reggae. We’re all students of this music and want to continue the legacy and culture.”- Nate Patrin, Bandcamp

City Pages: Best Compilation 'Sound Verite Records/IX Vol. 1 2016'

'Sound Verite Records/IX Vol. 1 2016'

The 16-track Sound Verite Records/IX Vol. 1 2016 arrived promising that it “takes a glance into what’s happening in Minneapolis hip-hop, electronica, soul, and experimental music.” That might sound disjointed, or even overly eclectic, but the compilation is remarkable for one main reason: If you like one song, there’s a good chance you’ll dig the other 15. There’s Sound Verite Records’ own ZULUZULUU and the otherworldly funk of their excellent “Fades,” plus songs from ZULUZULUU members Greg Grease and MMYYKK. Besides Grease, there are other gifted, whip-smart rappers, ranging from veterans like I Self Devine and Muja Messiah to fresher faces like Metasota and the Lioness. You also get rising youngsters, including inventive hip-hop duo Nazeem & Spencer Joles (“Fade into the Lush”) and St. Paul R&B phenom Dizzy Fae (who sings on producer Su Na’s SoundCloud smash “Complexion”). There’s a forward-thinking, socially conscious air about the entire compilation, starting with I Self Devine and Muja Messiah’s rousing Black Lives Matter anthem “We Ain’t Scared,” featuring Lady Midnight.

2DopeBoyz Premier :Grease Grease - Migraine (Produced by Psymun, Greg Grease & Trelly Mo

It’s been a long time coming, but Greg Grease makes his grand return to the DopeHouse today, following a nearly four year absence since releasing 2013’s “C.R.E.A.M. Dream” and assisting Doomtree on “WZRD Science” the following year.

As he prepares for his opening performance for Ghostface Killah and Kemba’s upcoming Red Bull Sound Select show in Tennessee later tonight (April 7), the MPLS native blesses the House of Dope with a green light to premiere his new single, “Migraine.”

Over bouncy production provided by himself (and additional input from Psymun and Trelly Mo), Greg, who has been harboring feelings of dissatisfaction in the wake of feeling scrutinized and bogged down by peers who “fake the funk,” self-medicates with a couple of spliffs, effectively alleviating his pulsing migraine.

Listen to the track below and catch Greg’s live backing band ZULUZULUU at this year’s Soundset Festival.
